Tthanks Shift } { for Webstock .. This trip was great and in short Webstock:
- Reinforced how UCD and design (and Jazz) are intertwined in a democratic, flexible process.. (thanks to Liz Danzico)
- Showed usability is evil cool – we can trick the brain into paying attention and prime it ready for action (actions we want them to do bwa ha ha) thanks to Amy Hoy and Kathy Sierra
- Reminded us that we’re doing it ‘for the children’ .and grandparents thanks to Damien Conway.. (not every site of course) be kind to users not treat them with contempt
- Demonstrated how to get ‘unstuck’
- Made usability sexy with Cognitive seduction
Lessons learned:
- Go into in peoples’ space – put on the pith helmet, safari suit and brave the spaces people use things we build. Get better data about them and set off our mirror neurons
- Don’t let clients put us at ‘one remove’ from users (filtered/gate keeper-ed by client representatives or market research) when we have means/budget
- Make people ‘kick *ss’ faster - Sell field work and validation as necessity, not an overhead.
